Basic information

The best hatching rate of eggs is when it is stored for not more than 7 days before beginning to incubate. When this process begins just allow cool eggs to warm slowly to room temperature before placing it in the incubator.  Abrupt warming from 55 degrees to 100 degrees can cause moisture condensation on the egg shell which can lead to disease and reduced hatches

Incubation is the process by which certain oviparous (egg-laying) animals hatch their eggs, it also the development of the embryo within the egg under favorable environmental condition. Multiple and various factors are vital to the incubation of various species of animal. In many species of reptile for example, no fixed temperature is necessary, but the actual temperature determines the sex ratio of the offspring

In birds’ contrast, the sex of offspring is genetically determined, but in many species a constant and particular temperature is necessary for successful incubation, especially in the poultry.  The act of sitting on eggs to incubate them is called brooding. The action or behavioral tendency to sit on a clutch of eggs is also called broodiness and most egg laying breeds of poultry have had this behavior selectively bred out of them to increase production

How to set up egg incubator

Product description

An egg incubator is designed to regulate incubation temperature and humidity at perfect levels. It recreates the role that the broody hen plays in nature. An incubator is an artificial method for the hatching of eggs. In essence, an incubator allows you to hatch eggs without having hens

Incubators mimic the conditions and experiences of a brooding hen for fertilized eggs, including appropriate temperature, humidity, and ventilation levels. To successfully hatch eggs in an incubator, you need to properly calibrate the incubator and keep the settings stable throughout the incubation period

An egg incubator is a machine that creates the perfect conditions for an egg to incubate and hatch successfully. An egg incubator creates a stable environment in which eggs can be hatched. By placing the eggs in an egg incubator you are more guaranteed that the conditions will remain consistent over the 21 day incubation period for chicken eggs. An egg incubator basically takes the guesswork out of incubation and increases the chances that you will get a good hatch rate

Processes

1. Store your eggs properly before you set them

This is process is particularly important, if you have eggs delivered by post or if they've been jolted on a journey. They need time to settle before you begin incubation. Then allow for at least 12 and preferably 24 hours for them to rest before they go into the incubator, and make sure they are stored in such a way as to maximize the likelihood of a successful hatch

2. Cleanliness is critical to any incubator set up

Once eggs begin incubation they start to become more porous. Added to that, the warm, moist air inside an incubator makes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria can kill an embryo, so it is very important to make sure your incubator is spotlessly clean, even if it's new

3. Humidity control

Humidity should be controlled in order to prevent unnecessary loss of egg moisture. The ideal of humidity level for hatching eggs is still being debated among experts, but many agree that it should not fall below 25% or above 60% between setting and three days prior to hatching. During the last three days which is the lock down period, the humidity level should be increased to between 70-80%. Keeping an adequate humidity range inside your incubator is quite simple. Please note that the humidity in your area will have an impact on how much water you will need in the incubator to keep it within the correct humidity range.  Check the water level periodically to ensure they don't dry out

4. Turn on your egg incubator before you put the eggs in

This is important for every incubator, whether it is a still or forced air machine. Otherwise, there is likely to be cold spots in the incubator which will mean the eggs will develop erratically particularly in still air machines

5. Setting up the egg incubator digital display

The incubators have a digital display which will shows what the temperature in the incubator is and how many days remain to hatch. The more advanced models also read and adjust the humidity levels. Reading the instructions for setup can make it sound complicated, but it's actually very straightforward

6. Turning the eggs

The eggs must be turned at least 2-3 times daily during the incubation period. Many experts say if you can turn them 4-5 times a day it is even better.  Do not turn eggs during the last three days before hatching. The embryos are moving into hatching position and need no turning. Keep the incubator closed during hatching to maintain proper temperature and humidity. Just be sure to remove them from the turner and lay them on the floor of the incubator which comes with a wire floor with three days before hatch. Place the incubator in an area with little or no temperature fluctuation. Ideal room conditions are 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing the incubator near a window, air vent, or any other area that experiences air flow or drafts

7. Plug the incubator's cord into an electric outlet

Ensure not to plug the cord into an outlet where it could easily detach, or where children might be able to unplug it. Check as well that that particular outlet is working

8. Ensure the incubator has adequate ventilation

There should be openings on the sides and top of the incubator to allow air flow. Checks to make sure these are at least partially opened. You will need to increase the amount of ventilation once the chicks begin to hatch

Precaution

1. Preparation before incubation should be order to avoid malfunction during the incubation period. Therefore, carry out comprehensive maintenance work before incubation, check the accuracy of the temperature regulator and thermometer; whether the motor, fan, electric heater, indicator light and alarm device are sensitive, whether the door, four walls and floor of the incubator are tight, and whether the egg tray is tight

2. Check the hatching tray if is firm or not, then prepare the generator for use in the event of a power failure

3. After sterilizing the incubator and testing the machine for 24 hours, everything should be normal before the hatching eggs can be hatched. The hatching eggs from the egg storage are placed in an incubation room at about 22 degrees Celsius for 4-6 hours, and the eggs are placed on a plate with the big end up and sterilized

Maintenance

1. Carefully wipe off any visible dust or debris from all the surfaces of the incubator. Then wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth or sponge dipped in a diluted bleach solution (mix 20 drops of household bleach in 1 quart of water.) Use gloves to protect your hands from the bleach and wring the cloth or sponge out before wiping down the incubator. Allow the incubator to air dry thoroughly before plugging it in for use

2. This cleaning step is particularly necessary if you bought the incubator second-hand or if you had it stored away somewhere, collecting dust

3. Keep in mind that sanitation is highly important. Diseases can be transmitted through the eggshell to the developing embryo

4. Replenish the water in the water pan regularly, filling up the pan helps maintain the desired level of humidity. If the water depletes, the humidity level will drop too low

5. Always add warm water

6. Ensure to add a sponge to the water pan if you want to increase the humidity

Frequently ask questions

Q: What is involved in the daily operation of the incubator?

A: always check the temperature, then add water if needed before proceeding to turn the eggs 3 times daily

Q: Why do I need to turn the eggs inside the incubator?

A: Turning of the eggs helps to force the embryo to exercise inside the eggs and develop the strength to push out of the shell
