Poultry farming

Poultry farming is the act of rearing birds basically for meat and egg production. There are different types of birds reared in the poultry farm such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese. Lots

of birds are reared every year for the purpose of consumption and as a means of earning a living. The birds reared for eggs are called layers while the ones that are reared for meat are

known as broilers. In the poultry farm there is a poultry house where the birds are kept

A comfortable or good poultry housing area directly affects the optimum growth and production in commercial poultry farming. The business of poultry farming is one of the profitable

businesses today.  It generates high profit when we do extra care in the construction of the poultry house. A better construction of the poultry house enhances the performance of the birds

and ensures better health

The intensive poultry farming is a system where the birds are kept in cages where they are not allowed to roam about. One alternative to intensive poultry farming is free range farming

where the birds are allowed to roam freely. Poultry producers routinely use nationally approved medications, such as antibiotics, in feeds or drinking water, to treat disease or to prevent

disease outbreaks

Types of poultry farming management

1. Chicken coop

The chicken coop which is also called the chicken house is a type of local cage where the chickens are kept safe and secure. The chicken coop can have perches and nest. Due to a

misunderstanding from a long time ago the chicken coop has two housing for the chickens Fresh air houses with wide openings and nothing more than wire mesh between chickens and

the weather, or closed houses with doors, windows and hatches which can shut off most ventilation

2. Free range

Free range poultry farming is an old type of farming whereby the birds are allowed to freely express their innate behaviors i.e. they are allowed to fend for themselves in a controlled and

predetermined environment. In free range poultry farm the environment must be controlled to accommodate the birds

3. Free-run

Instead of keeping them in cages, free-run laying hens roam freely within an enclosed barn. This type of housing also provides enrichment for the hens, including nesting boxes and perches

that are often located along the floor of the barn. Many believe that this type of housing is better for the bird than any caging system, but it has its disadvantages, too. Due to the increase in

activity of the birds, dust levels tend to elevate and the air quality decreases

4. Yarding

While often confused with free range farming, yarding is actually a separate method by which a hutch and fenced-off area outside are combined when farming poultry. The distinction is that

free-range poultry are either totally unfenced, or the fence is so distant that it has little influence on their freedom of movement. Yarding is a common technique used by small farms. The

birds are released daily from hutches or coops. The hens usually lay eggs either on the floor of the coop or in baskets if provided by the farmer. This husbandry technique can be complicated if used with roosters, mostly because of their aggressive behavior
