Basic information
Battery cages are the predominant form of housing for laying hens in poultry farm worldwide. They reduce aggression and cannibalism among hens, reduce feed wastage, egg breakage, disease outbreak and saves labour. Currently, approximately 95% of eggs in the world wide were produced in battery cages. There are several welfare concerns regarding the battery cage of housing and husbandry. These are presented below in the approximate chronological order they would influence the hens
Hens in battery cages (and other housing systems) are often kept at low light intensities (e.g. less than 10 lux). Low light intensities may be associated with welfare costs to the hens as they prefer to eat in brightly lit environments and prefer brightly lit areas for active behavior but dim (less than 10 lux) for inactive behavior. Dimming the lights can also cause problems when the intensity then abruptly increased temporarily to inspect the hens; this has been associated as a risk factor
The battery cage helps to reduce the harmful effects of feather pecking, cannibalism and vent-pecking, the first part is the rearing cycle - the chickens are raised from 0 - 20 weeks. The second part is the laying stage where the hens lay eggs, 21 weeks to 60 weeks - this is 40 weeks long about 10 months). Prices of battery cages and the cost of the battery cage depend on the size and installation of the battery cage
Product description
The battery cage is constructed for layers to produce clean and ensures an easy egg packing as well as minimal feed spillage when feeding chickens. They come with all the required water accessories and adjoining parts. The battery cage is suitable for all kinds of egg-laying chickens including breeders, layers, point-of-lay, and point-of cage birds. They are well designed for the clean and easy collection of eggs, a seamless serving of feed and easy management of the entire cage
Battery cage are galvanized wire cages for chickens. They are used in poultry houses, specifically layer houses, for the easy management of hens and the eggs they lay. Battery cages for commercial chicken houses are usually 4 tiers which mean that they are stacked up to 4 levels. The hens are kept in these battery cages for the 2nd phase of the laying cycle. (A laying cycle is made up of 2 parts

Usefulness of battery cage in the poultry
1. Increases egg production
A chicken that is healthy will significantly become more productive than chickens reared in environments that do not boost their health. Enriched battery cages increase the potential of egg production in chickens. In fact, recent estimations reveal that sixty percent of eggs used in products such as mayonnaise, sandwiches and cakes are from chickens reared in battery cages. This reveals that chickens have more tendencies to produce eggs in battery cages compared to other rearing systems. It is more advisable to use battery cages to aid egg production
2. Chick culling
Due to modern selective breeding, laying hen strains are different from those of meat production strains. Male birds of the laying strains do not lay eggs and are unsuitable for meat production. Therefore, they are culled soon after being sexed, often on the day of hatching. Methods of culling include cervical dislocation, asphyxiation by carbon dioxide and maceration using a high speed grinder
3. Debeaking
To reduce the harmful effects of feather pecking, cannibalism and vent pecking, most chicks eventually going into battery cages are beak-trimmed. This is often performed on the first day after hatching, simultaneously with sexing and receiving vaccinations. Beak-trimming is a procedure considered by many scientists to cause acute pain and distress with possible chronic pain. It is practiced on chicks for all types of housing systems, not only battery cages
4. Low cost of labour
The battery cage reduces labour by the poultry farmer. This is because the chickens are well-organized and conducted to be in rows with several facilities for their feeding, carriers of their faeces droppings adequately positioned and the eggs rolling to the appropriate places designed in the battery cages. The poultry farmer will simply do the job of pouring food and water in the designated areas, cleaning the faeces that drop and packing the eggs. This reduces stress for the farmer and the need to employ many workers for poultry farms will be minimized. In the long run, poultry farming will be more rewarding for the poultry workers
